Equipping Pictures for Proclamation in Digital Photo Booklets
If you enjoy having a good time, you could do worse than sharing online photos with others.
So you’re ready to publish your first of what could become several digital photo books. You are progressing nicely, having already selected your background, theme, and size. You begin uploading your pictures, amazed at how easily the work is proceeding. Then your high hopes are dashed by a message from your computer telling you your selected photographs do not make the grade to be printed. How does this compute?
When you take a picture with a digital camera, the image becomes “digitized” – that means made up of hundreds of thousands of pixels, which are nothing more than tiny colored squares. Make no mistake, the resolution, or clarity of a digital image is determined by how close the pixels are placed in the photograph. Pixel density is the key to pictures having higher resolutions and sharper images.
Considerations re: digital photography
- Save your original images in the format you first took them
- Some Internet sites compress images without asking permission
- Internet commonly squeezes pixels making them faster while losing some photo quality
Most photos on the Internet have very small pixel dimensions because they don’t have to be very large to appear decent in size and quality on your computer screen. Plus, smaller images download much faster than larger ones when perusing websites.
When we upload photos to image hosting sites, most of us choose the quick upload which saves time, but allows the site to upload the images as compressed, low-rez files – usually in jpg format. If one wants to maximize the quality of the image he is uploading to a website, it can take up to ten times longer than fast uploads.
Compressing all images sent to them is not uncommon among some websites. Don‘t make a cardinal sin and forget to save your original photos in their initial format.

Sadly, it‘s now time for you to wait and see.
The shortage of pixels in most Internet images is a deterrent to gaining the top-quality images you might desire. Pixel compression is an irreversible process. Using the original image is the only way to ensure quality printability for your image and for your digital photo books.
