Guide for New Attorneys
You have chosen a career in law and have just recently graduated. You are at a significant and exciting point in your life. You now face that critical decision most young lawyers must make: What law firm do I want to work for? Since there are many types of law firms to choose from, here are some of the factors you might want to consider:
Firm Size: What would you gain by working for an established law firm with a prestigious name? The advantages, of course, are many. As opposed to working in a small practice, you will likely earn a higher starting salary and have more diverse opportunities. When trying to make your mark in the field, working for a firm with a solid reputation may help. On the other hand, a new and inexperienced lawyer could get lost in the crowd in a large practice. A small law firm may provide a more intimate work environment and offer you greater responsibility and independence. The experience you would gain even in an entry level position could help you apply for a higher-level job later on.
Work Culture: The type of environment you would be working in depends partially on the type of clients serviced by the firm, as well as its particular work style and ethic. Important questions to ask include: What are the average number of weekly and daily work hours? What types of cases does the firm typically deal with? What type of supervision or support on the job can I expect?
Personality: Is there a good fit between your personality and the firm? Can you see yourself fitting in with the other lawyers who work there?
Room for Advancement: If the prospect of moving up is important to you, find out if upward mobility is possible in the law firm. If possible, speak to other employees in the firm about their experiences, or do some research on the firm itself and into the career paths of other attorneys who work there.
Once you have chosen a law firm, your next set of decisions are much more enjoyable. The time has come for you to spruce up your image as a respectable and classy attorney. The number one accessory, of course, is a professional-looking attorney briefcase. You usually have to pay top dollars for a lawyer briefcase, but for good reason. First, it makes you look sophisticated and prestigious. In addition, attorney briefcases are specially designed to meet your on-the-job needs, such a lock and internal compartments for organizing files and documents. An Italian leather briefcase is an attorney favorite, as are most briefcases made from real leather.

Indeed, according to experts in the field, the type of pen a lawyer carries is one of the most memorable and lasting images formed in the minds of judges and clients! So make sure you throw out your cheap plastic pen and go for gold.
