Working in a Law Firm
If you a recent law graduate, then this article is meant for you. You are at a significant and exciting point in your life. You now face that critical decision most young lawyers must make: What law firm do I want to work for? Since there are many types of law firms to choose from, here are some of the factors you might want to consider:
Firm Size: What would you gain by working for an established law firm with a prestigious name? The advantages, of course, are many. You will probably earn a higher wage, and there may be more opportunities and more diverse work roles than in a smaller firm. When trying to make your mark in the field, working for a firm with a solid reputation may help. On the other hand, a new and inexperienced lawyer could get lost in the crowd in a large practice. A small law firm may provide a more intimate work environment and offer you greater responsibility and independence. The experience you would gain even in an entry level position could help you apply for a higher-level job later on.
Work Culture: Keep in mind that each law firm may service a different type of clientele and support a certain work style or work ethic. Additional questions to ask are: How many hours a week would I be expected to work? What types of cases does the firm typically deal with? What type of supervision or support on the job can I expect?
Personality: Is there a good fit between your personality and the firm? What kind of vibe or reception do you get from the other attorneys and can you envision yourself working by their side?
Room for Advancement: If the prospect of moving up is important to you, find out if upward mobility is possible in the law firm. If you get a chance, speak to other lawyers employed by the firm to find out about their career paths and their experiences.
Once you have chosen a law firm, your next set of decisions are much more enjoyable. The time has come for you to spruce up your image as a respectable and classy attorney. The number one accessory, of course, is a professional-looking attorney briefcase. A lawyer’s briefcase is typically more expensive than an average briefcase, but it is well worth the investment. First, it makes you look sophisticated and prestigious. Second, attorney briefcases have special compartments for organizing important documents and a combination lock for securing confidential information. Modern briefcases can even house a laptop computer and feature pockets for a cell phone, PDA, and writing utensils. Best of all, they look great and come in an array of sleek styles and colors.
