Firm Size: Do you want to work for a well-known and prestigious law firm? The advantages, of course, are many. As opposed to working in a small practice, you will likely earn a higher starting salary and have more diverse opportunities. For someone who is just starting out in the business, working for a large firm will look good on your resume. On the other hand, a new and inexperienced lawyer could get lost in the crowd in a large practice. Conversely, although a smaller law firm may not boast a big name, it may offer significant benefits such as greater independence and more responsibilities. The experience you would gain even in an entry level position could help you apply for a higher-level job later on.
Work Culture: The type of environment you would be working in depends partially on the type of clients serviced by the firm, as well as its particular work style and ethic. Additional questions to ask are: What are the average number of weekly and daily work hours? What types of cases does the firm typically deal with? What type of supervision or support on the job can I expect?
Personality: Is there a good fit between your personality and the firm? Can you see yourself fitting in with the other lawyers who work there?
Room for Advancement: If the prospect of moving up is important to you, find out if upward mobility is possible in the law firm. If you get a chance, speak to other lawyers employed by the firm to find out about their career paths and their experiences.
After making your all-important law firm decision, your next task will be a breeze and lots of fun. The time has come for you to spruce up your image as a respectable and classy attorney.
