500,000 tourists flock to Orlando theme parks, events (local6)
An estimated 500,000 tourists are in Central Florida for the holidays,
bringing money to Orlando-area businesses but also forcing theme parks to
close because they’ve reached capacity. Officials said hotels throughout
Central Florida are at 95 percent capacity, thanks, in part, to two college
football bowl games. Florida State defeated Notre Dame, two marquee programs,
in the Champ Sports Bowl at the Citrus Bowl on Thursday night. The game was a
sellout, and numerous fans remain on vacation in the Orlando area. Meanwhile,
South Carolina and Nebraska fans have gathered for Monday’s Capital One Bowl.
Islands of Adventure at Universal Orlando, several Walt Disney World parks and
Legoland Florida, have been forced to temporarily close over the past couple
of days because the parks have reached capacity, a trend that’s likely to
continue through New Year’s Day. Many tourists said they were annoyed by the
large crowds, but it hasn’t deterred them from returning to The City
Beautiful. “We had to wait about two-and-a-half hours for one ride, so, I
mean, that’s a long time,” a tourist said. “We’ve lost a person here or there
