Online College Classes – Learn To Take Great Notes And Ace Your Next Exam!
Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree seeking students share two constant college rituals. One, they all have to listen to course lectures; two, they all have to take lecture notes. Class notes are an essential part of learning. That is why students who miss class (for whatever reason) are sure to collect notes from trusted colleagues. When notes are written properly, they can be effective to use as a study aid or as research documentation. This article contains a few tips that might help you become a better note-taker.
Taking notes while reading a book and taking notes while listening to a live speaker are two different tasks. It is very easy to flip back to a previous page when checking facts or recalling information when you are reading. However, when you are taking notes from a live speaker, you generally cannot ask him or her to stop and repeat what he or she said. There are some strategic guidelines that can help you write notes that evoke information.
One of the most important guidelines is to stay focused when a speaker is talking. Be sure to pay close attention to the information that is being presented. Don’t let you mind wander and take flight with day dreams; stay zoned in on the communication. If you are one who can be easily distracted, remove yourself from any areas that have the potential to evoke commotions or interruptions. Turn off the TV and all other electronics, if possible.
A good speaker, whether it is a professor giving a class lecture or a guest speaker, will give an overview of what he or she plans to discuss; this is the introduction. They will follow through with by summing up the main points in the conclusion. Therefore, pay close attention to the introduction and conclusion. In doing so, you can have notes that reflect all of the main points of the presentation.
Nonverbal communication is also very important. Take notice of visual communications such as eye contact, body language, and hand gestures. They can sometimes emphasize a main point, which can be significant to understanding the information.
Speakers often include transition words in their speeches to hint that important information is coming forth. Therefore, listen for cue words like first, in conclusion, the main point, or most important. These are words that signal important information ahead, so be sure to write down details that precede cue words.
Don’t try to write everything you hear; concentrate on listening for important details. Use only key words or phrases when taking notes to save time. Complete sentences are not recommended. Time wasted on writing an entire sentence could hinder you for hearing subsequent information, which may be valuable. Read over your notes as soon as the presentation is over, so you can fill in any missing details while you still have lecture or speech fresh in your memory.
Effective note-taking can produce an essential source for studying or a significant source of research information. Students attending accredited online classes should understand that taking excellent notes is a skill and one that should be learned by all. Students who have not yet mastered the art of note-taking should consider implementing helpful strategies when taking notes as they participate in online universities. These above guidelines will not only help you write better notes, they can help you write more efficient notes so that you can still enjoy the lecture.
